Oh 11/01/19 we went over game design. We discussed about what makes a game, the common principles within the game, the generations of gaming, emulation.
In this blog I am going to be discussing about 8 of the formal elements of game design.
Players
A voluntary participant who participates in the game.
Objectives
A list of things to motivate the player and giving goals to approach to the next level or goal.
Procedures
“...items [or concepts] made ‘valuable’ by their scarcity and utility. In the real world, and in game worlds, resources can be used to further our aims; they can be combined to make new products or items [or keep us alive]; [some resources] ...can be bought and sold...”.
Essentially, common materials used in video games.
Rules
Rules reflect on the players actions when they breach the terms of use and the player itself should refrain from breaching a rule. Otherwise, consequences get put into place.
Resources
“...[The] space in which a game takes place [is]... the “magic circle,” a temporary world where the rules of the game apply, rather than the rules of the ordinary world. All play moves and has its beginning within a playground marked off beforehand either materially or ideally . . . the arena, the card-table, the magic circle, the temple, the stage, the screen, the court of justice, etc. are all in form and function ‘playgrounds’ i.e. forbidden spots, isolated, hedged round, within which special rules obtain. All are temporary worlds within the ordinary world, dedicated to the performance of an act apart.”. - Johan Huizinga (1938)
Conflict
“... the relationship between the objectives of the players and the rules and procedures limiting and guiding behavior creates another distinctive element of games: conflict, which the players work to resolve in their own favor.”.
Boundaries
A limitation that is within a bubble of some sort or a planet.
Outcomes
The action to the result that contribute to the outcome.
I went onto an emulator website called: Virtual Consoles. I played Donkey Kong Country, Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Mega Man X for Super Nintendo (SNES). The SNES also happens to be one of my favorite Nintendo consoles of all time thanks to the libraries top tier quality games, timeless 16-32 bit graphics, well created level designs and unforgettable sounds.
