In January, most of the year 2 next-gen students went to the Pocket Gamer convention which is hosted at the Brewery in London. For the day, we went around the convention had talks and interactions with the developers, publishers, and staff themselves.
To start off the day I went around with my friend Louis and interacted with a few game industry members. I played a VR music game (Don't remember the name).
I and my friend David had a chat with Leigh's friends; Sarah and Josh (Can't remember his name for the life of me.). About our skills, studies, and portfolios. Fun and interesting conversation overall.
Afterward, I went into one of the conferences. Nutaku's Adult Games conference. I will say it was weird, interesting, and surprising. Weird because of how foreign and out of touch it may seem to some audiences that aren't familiar with it. Surprising because of how well it does in the west and the sales i gathered. "Interesting" because sexism in games is usually a shy and controversial one but a company like Nutaku is not hesitant and holds no boundaries. Weird because well to the majority of us in the west it is weird and I think the audience that was surrounding us and when I sitting in that conference made it feel weird in the sense that a few attendees shouldn't be there. Personally, I liked the Nutaku adult games conference.
After the Nutaku conference, I was gathering more business cards and walked around the area with friends. Me, Archie, Louis, Sebastian, and I think, David was going around the areas one more time and we talked to this guy from Microsoft. His advice was creating a good portfolio all around. In fact, he told us he got into Microsoft because he had made Minecraft tutorial videos on youtube. That somewhat surprised me because something such as Minecraft is rather surprising but it does endless creativity and creations at the end of the day. The only limit in Minecraft is the imagination of yours.
Once that was done, some of our friends were getting interviewed by Sarah. I remember Izzy got a potential job out of the interview which is good. I personally never interviewed with Sarah as I didn't feel ready and confident in myself with the portfolio I had. I needed more time to establish, hone my skills and portfolio altogether. Whilst they were getting interviewed, Leigh's friend, Dan had a chat with each of us. When I first spoke to him my answer wasn't completely genuine and had a good impression this was because I was right on the spot. I made it sound like I was disinterested and I didn't want that to be the case. That being said, it would be later on down the line (1 month) that Dan would visit Nescot and bring us about the game prototype for work experience. I will leave a blog link in the last paragraph in case you haven't seen it yet.
After I was satisfied with what I wanted to do, I decided to wait for my friends Archie and Izzy. They were leaving at the same time and I wanted to hang out with them.
This has been the second time I went to pocket gamer and shall be my last pocket gamer conference I go to.
