Marketing: Getting to know the games industry - Audiences

Updated: May 25, 2020

When it comes to audiences you need to know the people who are playing your game, meeting the demographics, and being in touch with the audience. If you think your game is going to be played by everyone that's dangerous - resulting in the end product could be played by no one. With exceptions like Minecraft, Angry Birds, and any casual games.

Every game publisher will have their own version of segmentations. For example Rockstar publishes western triple-A titles such as Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption which series like those have a widespread, highly popular audience in the west.

Demographics matter when creating a game to meet the audience and segmentations. Surveys are a super useful and efficient method.

Motivation is a question to get to know why the player or a participant on why they play the game.

With research that was implemented into the audiences, EA (Electronic Arts) discovered that there were 9 types of people out of 20,000 people that filled in the survey. - Imaginators

- Problem solvers (Improvers)

- Category enthusiasts

- 'Not' A Gamer gamers

- Prize finders

- Storytellers - Party People - Score Chasers

- Strategy Kings (Write one paragraph each for the 9 types of people)

The most open-minded of the audience, these are considered a minority in the gaming world. They are willingly open to play any genre and types of games being niche genres like Indie, Metroidvania, and Roguelikes or specific genres like Japanese RPGs, Arcades, etc.

The casual player. Usually these kinds of gamers would play mobile games or maybe even mainstream titles such as Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and sports games (I.e FIFA, NHL, NBA). For the 'Not' A Gamer Gamers, these kinds of people would prioritize real-life matters more than video games themselves. The demographics show that the majority of the participants are female.

Problem solvers (Improvers)

Improving the mentality, proficiency, hand to eye coordination, and brain. Problem Solvers see games as a fit to be educational tools Such as playing cards or board games with other people around the word or with their friends. The majority that covers this demographic are females and approximately at the age of 45-64

Prize Finders are motivated by prizes in-game. Prize finders usually play gatcha games, casual or simple games (i.e the gambling kind). The average age consists of 22-44-year-olds

Imaginators

Imaginators have the desire and power to create their own. Making their visions become real in the video game worlds. Games such as LittleBigPlanet, Garry's Mod, Sim City, Dungeons and Dragons, Dragon Age, and Minecraft can help envision the players creative and provide them the tools to present their styles and ideas amongst other gamers.

Party People are the kind of players that require multiplayer games with multiple people. Moreover they are interested in playing party games in technology format rather than board physical format. Games such as Monopoly, Uno (digital versions), Just Dance, Jackbox party, and Mario Party suit for the play style and fit into the demographics.

Score Chasers are players who are motivated to get the highest score in a game and potentially breaking the record. Desire is one of the key motivations to gain the highest or record-breaking score in the game. Games such as Mario's Donkey Kong, Pac Man, and Space Invaders are the best fit for scores.

Strategy Kings

As it says in the name, these players are strategists and will test and take measures in leading to success. They desire to be the best and gaining prestige. They are the ideal to be ones in charge and leading the way in the game.
