Images and Sounds for Imagined Worlds: Video Game Concept Arts

Updated: May 25, 2020

In this blog I am going to analyze concept art piece(s) I have picked out on google. What really caught my interest, meets my standards in concept art and concept art that makes me genuinely inspired. I will be looking over different artists from a different video game, sci-fi concept arts

Concept Art piece #1: God of War

For this concept art piece, we see Kratos is standing in the middle of a snow forest environment accompanied by rough, snowy mountains alongside white crystal clouds in the back from the furthest perspective. We also see that perspective is very well utilized and is brought to life in this rich, fantasy mythological world that is God of War. Rule of Thirds is used well with the trees surrounding on both sides. Kratos is mostly on the bottom with the accurate perspective on foot. You can feel that you're in front of Kratos from a first-person perspective. With objects that are near him. The treasure chest could be hinting at collecting items to go for an adventure. This makes the player feel immersed and tense on the edge of the right seat. Raring their ego for adventure alongside Kratos.

Imagine having an adventure with Kratos?

With that out of the way I will think about the sound you can hear and feel within this image of an imaginary world.

The sound effects: You can hear wind, the snow you trample on with other materials you step on such as wood log and rocks. Leaves swerving by the winds Which are all diegetic sounds. As for the non-diagetic however, creatures could be lurking making noises such as footsteps, roars, and screams around the area in which you wouldn't see in this image,

Concept art piece #2 Nier Automata

This concept art piece we can see that the characters (9S) and his Android are walking on an industrial factory. Perspective is very focused on the center and (especially right hand is very occupied from the rule of thirds.) with many details and pieces occupied. Whereas the characters themselves are on the left-hand side of the rule of thirds. In a way, this does balance things out in terms of composition.

The sound I could hear and feel in this concept would be industrial factory sounds, cranes moving about swiftly, gas pumping, If it we're to be a movie image there would be sounds coming from the android itself and 9S would be walking alongside the factory.

Concept art piece #3 Bloodborne

This concept art piece is dark, gothic, and very well detailed in its colors. Giving off a dark fantasy atmosphere on its own. With a rather tall dimension this makes sense due to the world of Bloodborne having tall, dark, creepy, abandoned, and Victorian-style buildings. On top of that, the dimensions are quite tall (from a vertical points) in the matter of perspective.

The diegetic sounds that you could hear from this are: Flame kindling and sparkling round, hollow sounds, water puddles splashing. Non-diagetic sounds could be crows gawking

How will this affect my final piece?

The final piece will share loose inspirations based on the concept arts shown in this blog. Due to my love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy concept arts, I have the desire to produce my own imagined world with the genres of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Element such as survival, abandonment, lone wolf. I want my concept art piece to be as natural and strong for what it is.

My concept art will strive for very loose inspirations by taking minimal elements from these concept arts alone to create something of my own piece of concept art.
