Genres of games

Updated: Sep 6, 2019

Today, I will be going over my favorite game genres

Japanese Role-Playing game: often linear, story based, text heavy games. Either turn based, action or strategy. Typically, there are health bars, magic or mana points, inventory, items, stats, skill points and characters.

Mainly single player games with little customization when compared to a Western RPG

Examples include: Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Earthbound/Mother series

You can level up your characters, stats and skills Sandbox: Freedom, creative, you can do create anything you want. There are limits but there are no creative limits. Examples include: Minecraft, Gary's Mod, Starbound and Terrraria Open World: Exploring the world openly (as it suggests in the name.), finding new areas and places to go. Examples include: The Witcher, Fallout, Elder Scrolls series, Gothic, Neverwinter and Dark Souls Platformers: Range between 2D-3D Platformers with side scrolling elements, power ups, lifes and item currency bonus. Oftenly when you get a certain item 100 times you get another life.

Examples include: Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, A Hat in Time and Hollow Knight Overall, these are the defintions of 4 game genres.
