Animation Pioneers: William Hanna and Joseph Barbera

Updated: Sep 6, 2019

William Hanna was an American animator, director, producer, voice actor, cartoon artist, and musician. Joseph Barbera was an American animator, director, producer, storyboard artist, and cartoon artist. William and Joseph's film and televisions cartoon characters entertained millions of fans worldwide for the majority of the 20th century.

They're both well known for: The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry and the Smurfs.

To put it into words, William and Joseph are the fathers and legends of 50-70's cartoons and entertainment for the animation industry. I will be going over and briefly talk about a scene from The Flintstones and a scene from Scooby Doo:

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Intro vs Actual Scenes

This video compares the scenes from the intro to the final version of the episodes. Whilst watching the intro, William and Joseph tend to recycle their background music a frequently. They use the laughing crowd sound effect to overlap their reactions from the hilarious moments that Scooby, Shaggy and the cast that reflect their actions on. They recycle their running effect. At the time, this was revolutionary and incredibly stood out for the time.

The Flintstones At The Airport

A scene in the Flintstones. The Flintstones and Rubbles are going to visit uncle Tex at Texarock. They use exaggerations, stretch and squeezes and comedic laughing effects. They use comedic laughing effects to either exaggerate or emphasize on the comedic effect. When they use stretch and squeezes they tend to use it in an exaggeration way to provoke people to get a reaction from the scenes. William and Joseph have produced some great and entertaining works over their career and I think they've influenced the industry really well.

And that concludes for this blog.
